Most images on this web sites are sourced from Astronomy Picture of the Day (otherwise known as APOD) which is always worth a quick (or long) browse.

Some (though certainly not all) images found on APOD have suitable copyrights and licenses to enable re-use and a small subset of those are shown on this web site.

Others may be taken direct from ESA or via Wikipedia.

Image of Stephan's Quintet taken by Hubble and from the APOD site

External site This image is of a galaxy grouping called "Stephan's Quintet" which lies some 300 million light years away... i.e. the light you see today started its travel towards earth maybe 50 million years before the beginning of the age of the dinosaurs on earth ... a sobering thought, though actually quite recent (and quite a short distance) in astronomical terms. (APOD)

Image of cluster Trumpler 14 taken by Hubble and from the APOD site

External site Hubble image of star cluster "Trumpler 14". The small dark cloud left of centre may be a planetary system trying to form before being destroyed by the energetic winds of Trumpler 14's massive stars. (APOD)

The first horizon-scale image of a Black Hole (or at least, the material surrounding it plus the dark bit in the middle)

External site The first horizon-scale image of a Black Hole (or at least, the material surrounding it plus the dark bit in the middle). (APOD)
